Things you need to know about Surfing in the Maldives

Our surfing holidays in the Maldives range from luxury surfing resorts to surf charter boats, which cruise the Maldives in search of the perfect waves. Always wanted to travel to the Maldives but not sure where to start or where to go? Check out our quick guide to what you need to know about surfing in the Maldives

Where to go?

Situated in the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is comprised of 26 ring shape atolls, which are made up of over a 1000 coral islands. The entire archipelago of the Maldives can be divided into three different surf areas: Male Atolls, Central Atolls and South Atolls. The differences between them are about swell size, consistency and most of all in the crowd.

Swell is amazingly consistent in this part of the world, with great surfing spots across the islands.  Even on flat days, you can keep yourself entertained with snorkelling in and around the islands (even under!) and fishing.

Errant Surf offers numerous destinations and experiences within the Maldives. Himmafushi is a typical fishing island with about 750 inhabitants, sandy roads and palm trees. You can walk around the island in approx. 40min and watch the locals going after their daily routine. Located 17 km north of the capital Male the transfer by ferry takes around 45 min.

Also based in the in the North Male Atoll of the Maldives is the Hhudhuranfishi Resort, surrounded by crystal clear water and peaceful seclusion, when you’re not out on the water catching perfect waves. The Hhudhuranfishi Resort has the unique advantage of having its own private wave called Lohis so you’ll always have the opportunity to surf in an uncrowded line-up. If you’re looking to surf something other than the left at Lohis all day every day, then fear not, as private boats leave the resort on a daily basis hunting for other waves in the area.

It’s important to make sure that when booking your surf trip to the Maldives that surf passes are included within the package. Most resorts within the maldives own the rights to surf passes, but if you aren’t sure, contact a member of the errant team to check.

When is peak swell season in the Maldives?

The surfing season in the Maldives depends on the atolls, but peak swell in the Maldives is normally in June, July and August. However, the surf is pretty good from April until October.

How can I get the best surf trip deal?

  • Booking your surf trip early! – Book early and get ahead of the crowd to secure your prefered dates.
  • Always wanted an amazing surf trip with your friends? –  Organise a group trip with 8-10 friends and rent out your own private boat charter.

What board size/volume is best to take?

Anything goes! The Maldives are known for their long surf points, ranging from the fast and hollow breaks to the more fun and forgiving waves. We suggest that it is probably best to bring two boards to cover all surfing conditions that the Maldives has to offer and a board that you are comfortable riding of course!
