After the recent success of a handful of Newquay-based longboarders at the Relentless Boardmasters 2011, who recently qualified to compete in the World Championship Longboarding Tour, Errant Surf Holidays is running a Longboard Coaching Weekend at Errant’s newly extended surf coaching centre in Newquay on 17th and 18th September 2011, enabling novice Longboarders to hone their skills with one of the UK’s best!

Chris Thomson who is one of the UK’s top surf coaches will be running the two-day course at the Errant Surf Training Centre in Newquay, which has recently been kitted out with top of the range video coaching equipment and is offering this unique opportunity to longboarders’ on a first come, first serve basis.

Chris has taught specialist coaching workshops around the world for over ten years. He is the owner and Director of Errant Surf Holidays and is the Director of the Ground Swell CIC Foundation, which provides career opportunities for aspiring young surfers.

With an obvious passion for helping bring out the untapped potential of surfers of all abilities, Chris aims to take longboarders’ on the course to the next level. There is also the option of accommodation that will be exclusive for the course attendee’s, thus encouraging peer-to-peer engagement, as well as an obvious opportunity of an exhilarating break away from the stresses and strains of modern life!

Chris says: “The course in September has been inspired by a number of Moroccan longboard coaching weeks that I have run and with the growing number of novice longboarders in the lineup these days, it just makes sense to offer the training right here in the surfing capital of the UK. The course is laid back but very informative and we aim to provide a solid coaching plan for surfers on the course for the coming six to eight months.”

The course will start at 10am on Saturday 17th September at Errant Surf School, Newquay and will finish at 4pm Sunday 18th. The price is £149 per person with accommodation or £99 without accommodation. Please email chris@errantsurf.com or call 01637 851403 for more information.

You’ll be hanging five (like Chris below) in no time…

With over half the tickets now sold, the inaugural Christian Surfers International fundraiser looks like being a great success. The ‘Source cafe’ ( Seymour Avenue ) on May 19th, in Newquay, Cornwall is the chosen venue for this exciting evening. The organisation, is active in over 30 countries, and has been at work in the UK, through its affiliation to the charity, Christian Surfers UK for around 20 years.

The organisation works alongside serving numerous National surfing bodies, in order to help develop the sport of surfing, as well running their own extensive programs, including high profile surf contests, surf camps and regional gatherings.

The exciting evening will consist of a rare opportunity to hear from the current director, and founder of Christian Surfers International, Brett Davis talking about the work, and exciting plans for the future, including the world tour Chaplaincy project, the Japanese Tsunami relief work and Surfers Bibles’ project. Brett currently lives near Sydney ( Australia ) and is only in the UK for a few days.

As well as hearing from Brett, and other key Surf Industry personnel, guests will also be settling down to a lovely meal, laid on by the team at the ‘Surf’ themed, Source Cafe.

One of the other highlights of the evening will be the charity auction, which already includes some great prizes to bid for, including a couple of hand crafted and painted Alaia boards, brought from Australia, a beautiful looking ‘nineplus’ double vee ‘fish’, and a bunch of goodies from Errant surf holidays. as well as lots of other great items.

Even if you cannot get to the event on the night, you will be able to download the auction items, on Wednesday 18th, so you can bid over the phone or place a closed bid online. If you have any items that can generously be donated to the evening, please contact David Renyard below, and donators will be given coverage in the auction brochure, as well as later press releases.

Dress code is smart, and tickets are strictly limited and priced at only £15, which includes your first drink, and your meal. For more information on this evening, or to order tickets directly go to the Christian Surfers UK website and go to the online shop, under the membership tab, or e-mail David Renyard.

This promises to be a fantastic evening, and all money raised will go to the work of the organisation both in the UK and further afield. Tickets are strictly limited so ensure you get involved as soon as possible.

The one thing about surfing green waves that freaks me out is the “drop” you get where you are at the top, just as the wave breaks.

Its Thursday morning, I leave Gloucester at 11am and by 4pm before unpacking or checking into the hotel, I was standing outside Errant Surf School in my wetsuit ready to go.

The waves were good, there were a few sets coming in, some nice sized green waves which were breaking right where we were & a few sets of big ones which were breaking further out, so with those ones we would just Eskimo roll under them & wait for the smaller ones to come through.

The one thing about surfing green waves that freaks me out is the “drop” you get where you are at the top, just as the wave breaks. I normally find that if I see the drop I’ll just chicken out, where as if I don’t look at the drop I find that I enjoy it. BUT at the same time I obviously need to look where I’m going, so that’s something I need to work at!

That surf was good fun, and I nice introduction to the sea again (as it’s been 5 months since the last surf). On the Friday we headed out in the morning. The waves were yet again really good, however overnight I had somehow lost the ability to do a pop up. After 45 minutes & getting more & more frustrated. I picked up my board, stormed off onto the beach & collapsed on the sand. Getting more agitated that I can’t pop up properly I thought to myself that stressing out isn’t helping the situation, so went for lunch and a walk round town.

On my return I was determined to not let this morning’s attempt put a downer on the afternoon surf. I had PMA, I was chilled out, I had a fully stomach (but obviously let it digest a bit first!) and I was ready to get this show on the road.

The waves this afternoon seemed a lot more peaceful than the morning, they were actually perfect. Curling nicely at the top, glistening in the sun, a beautiful blue & they seemed to be going in slow motion.

After a few white water rides I was checking out an approaching wave, I thought to myself “This is the one” I paddled as quick as I could to get to the same speed as the wave, it picked me up, it was a perfect positioning, im getting ready stand. But I see the drop…and bail. Yet again it was mind over matter & the mind won. I turned back and began to paddle out. A few waves later I see another one approaching, I paddle to get my speed up. I then remembered something I was told on an Improver weekend with Errant. The words I had to remember when surfing:

LOOK: Look at the wave behind you as your paddling to see what it’s doing

TWO:Two more paddles when on the wave

GREEN:Catch green waves

HANDS: keep my hands in front and not dragging behind.

So as I was paddling I “Looked” the waves was approaching almost in slow motion, it looked perfect. However I couldn’t catch it, It didn’t look like it was going to break in time, as I was about to back off I had this “paddle, paddle, paddle” pop up in my head. So I did. I paddled as fast as could and I caught up with it, all of a sudden I felt the wave begin to lift up the back of my board, I remembered my Two more stroked and popped up. As I stood up, it was the most amazing feeling, there was no dreaded drop. Instead, there was this perfect, smooth glide down the front of the wave – That was it, that was the feeling I had in Spain, I’d got it back!

Once I felt it, I wanted it again, so I paddled out. Successfully doing this on about 7 consecutive waves, I realised I knew exactly what I needed to do. All that information surf coaches have been telling me for a year or so all popped into place like a puzzle and I felt the biggest feeling of self-achievement and joy.
All I need to do now is bottom turn, cutback, foam climb, barrel ride and the list goes on.
For now Im though I’m happy enough knowing I’ve broken one barrier, the rest will come in good time and practice.

When people flock to the beach to enjoy the sun and surf, a beach lifeguard is responsible for keeping them safe. The ocean can be a dangerous place with rip tides, dangerous marine life, and crashing waves. It’s the beach lifeguard’s job to ensure that people safely enjoy their time in and around the water. Since this type of job is a demanding one, an applicant must meet certain standards before being allowed to become a beach lifeguard.

Errant’s flagship surf school and training centre in Newquay, Cornwall plays host to year round beach lifeguard courses. These six day long courses are a blend of water training, swim training, basic first aid skills and CPR.
