After the recent success of a handful of Newquay-based longboarders at the Relentless Boardmasters 2011, who recently qualified to compete in the World Championship Longboarding Tour, Errant Surf Holidays is running a Longboard Coaching Weekend at Errant’s newly extended surf coaching centre in Newquay on 17th and 18th September 2011, enabling novice Longboarders to hone their skills with one of the UK’s best!

Chris Thomson who is one of the UK’s top surf coaches will be running the two-day course at the Errant Surf Training Centre in Newquay, which has recently been kitted out with top of the range video coaching equipment and is offering this unique opportunity to longboarders’ on a first come, first serve basis.

Chris has taught specialist coaching workshops around the world for over ten years. He is the owner and Director of Errant Surf Holidays and is the Director of the Ground Swell CIC Foundation, which provides career opportunities for aspiring young surfers.

With an obvious passion for helping bring out the untapped potential of surfers of all abilities, Chris aims to take longboarders’ on the course to the next level. There is also the option of accommodation that will be exclusive for the course attendee’s, thus encouraging peer-to-peer engagement, as well as an obvious opportunity of an exhilarating break away from the stresses and strains of modern life!

Chris says: “The course in September has been inspired by a number of Moroccan longboard coaching weeks that I have run and with the growing number of novice longboarders in the lineup these days, it just makes sense to offer the training right here in the surfing capital of the UK. The course is laid back but very informative and we aim to provide a solid coaching plan for surfers on the course for the coming six to eight months.”

The course will start at 10am on Saturday 17th September at Errant Surf School, Newquay and will finish at 4pm Sunday 18th. The price is £149 per person with accommodation or £99 without accommodation. Please email chris@errantsurf.com or call 01637 851403 for more information.

You’ll be hanging five (like Chris below) in no time…

Busy day today at our surf school in Newquay. We had the final lifeguard exam for our March “Cross Step” Course, 8 young people out of work and education have been trained to become British Surfing Association surf coaches and NARS Beach Lifeguards since the start of March, at no cost to them.

Today was the full exam NARS Beach Lifeguard Award, and everyone did extremely well in the surf and on land. Especially Megan Burns, who despite only training on the rescue boards since 1st March had one examiner commenting on her being the “strongest female in the water” he had seen for some time.

Jem, Ben, Andy, Megan and Josh, just some of the Cross Steppers

We also hosted the guys from Watergate Bay as they re-qualified as beach lifeguards. Vince Timson, Errant’s head lifeguard trainer sneaked in some real life scenarios for the seasoned lifeguards, including a sneaky casualty in the rocks.

A "real life" test for the lifeguards

While all this was going on Chris was coaching the stag group who were staying up the road at the Newquay surf lodge. Despite some soar heads the boys did well and most stood up. No doubt the boys will be practicing the same moves tonight, but on the dance floor of Sailors!

The third event on the UK Pro Surf Tour will be the Surf Relief Contest to be held at Watergate Bay, Newquay. An event which has grown from strength to strength over the past five years and is now included as the third leg of the UK Pro Surf Tour.

The current leader of the UK Pro Surf Tour, Alan Stokes will be hoping to consolidate his position at the head of the pack, however with the amount of talented surfers in the draw it will be extremely difficult. An inform, Reubyn Ash from Bude will be hoping to improve his rankings, Reubyn has been pushing boundaries of contemporary surfing all year including pulling off a Rodeo Cowboy manoeuvre recently at Arugam Bay.

In the women’s event, Beth Mason and Gwen Spurlock from Swansea will be the two to watch, however 17 year old Zoe Sheath and 15 year old Tass Swallow are amoungst other talented girls who could take the title.

On the Grommets tour the title is wide open with good performances coming from many of the surfers. Possibly one’s to watch are Beau Bromham from Croyde in the Under 16 Boys, Lucy Campbell from Wooolacombe in the Under 16 Girls and Harry DeRoth from St Ives in the Under 12 Open.

Dave Reed, contest director for the surf contest and tour commented: “It is fantastic that the tour will be part the Surf Relief event again, many of the surfers will be pleased to compete at this event to not only improve their ratings on the UK Pro Surf Tour, but also support Surf Relief in their efforts to help disabled and disadvantaged children” adding “we are also please to be able to contribute all the entry fees from the event to the charity”.

Dave Manley, Chairman of Surf Relief commented: “Surfing is at the core of what Surf Relief is all about and having one of the of the UK Pro Tour competitions at our annual fund raising event adds further creditability to the charity. The quality of surfing has always been high at our events with pro surfers supporting the charity from its inception 5 years ago; however with prize money and points for the tour champion at stake, this year the standard of surfing in all categories will be greater still.

On the Saturday of the event disabled and disadvantaged children and young people will be receiving lessons alongside the best surfers in the country who will be competing in the same waves – showing that surfing is really a sport for all. With lots of beach events and live music on the beach I’m sure the Surf Relief Festival 2009 will be one of the highlights on the 2009 UK Pro Tour”.

In addition to all the prizes given Relentless Energy Drink will be awarding £250 to the surfer who performs the most progressive manoeuvre in the event, which could come from the Open, Women’s or Grommet divisions. King of the Wave Award will be going to the highest scoring waves for both men and women, donated by kingofwatersports.com

Also taking place during the weekend will be: Live music, a surf lifesaving tournament, games and activities to make the White Stuff Surf Relief Festival a great day out.
