2016 was a beautiful bipolar year of joy, sadness, struggles and opportunities for me, but there can’t be highlights without the lowlights can there? Moments like this, sharing the stoke with new friends as part of my job will stick with me. So in light of stoke shared surfing tropical waves, I’ve decided that this year is the year of the tropical surf trip and you’ve got to go tropical in 2017. I mean why not? Surfing in next to nothing all day, sunset beers in the evening, fresh fish to refuel, early nights and repeat.

It’s called living the dream and here are our top 5 tropical surf destinations for 2017 where living the dream is part of the package:

Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a beautiful country and a place that you have to visit, to understand, appreciate and feel pure life; Pura Vida. Pura Vida is the national saying, it means pure life, which basically means love; love to the land, the ocean, the environment and the people. That’s a lot of love and I have a lot of love for Costa Rica too. The waves are consistent, never flat and rarely scary, the food is delicious, the local beer (Imperial) is always cold and moorish, the country is clean and the people are welcoming. What more could you want? Here’s me on a bomb last February on the Ticket to Ride Trip I was running.

Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka really is an exotic paradise boasting breath-taking beauty, raw wildlife, colourful cuisine and fascinating culture. It is also home to some of the friendliest people you will ever meet and your money goes a long way down here. Whether it’s the sunrise surfing in World Famous Arugam Bay, sunset surf sessions in Mirissa, climbing Adam’s Peak, or visiting the fascinating tea plantations, monesteries, temples in the Hill Country, you will be in awe the whole trip.

I fell in love with Sri Lanka years ago and continue to love everything about the place and the people. It’s beautiful in its own rugged way, I mean the dogs do eat out of rubbish on the side of the road and the waves are pretty weak compare to Bali but it has my heart.

Indonesia
Indonesia is the World’s number 1 surf destination and rightly so.

With surfers first finding the perfect surf peeling its way down the Bukit Peninsula in the 70’s, it didn’t take long for the secret to spread and surfers from all over the World soon started to make the pilgrimage to find this magical place.  Over forty years later it is still home to the best waves on The Planet. With more than 13,000 islands, home to countless waves, Indonesia is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I’m going back here in May and can’t wait. Knowing you’re going to get barreled is an unexplainable feeling. Here’s Lil from last May’s Ticket to Ride trip on a left in Lombok, way heavier than it looks.

Maldives

This place needs no introduction. But ideally you will do a boat trip with a bunch of mates cruising the Maldives in search of absolutely perfect waves like this:

Boat charters start at around a £grand and are woth every penny. More info.

Norway

Ok this place isn’t tropical but what it lacks in temperature it makes up in awesomeness. Hoddevik is possibly the most beautiful surfing town in the World and with a population of around 30, you’ll be lucky to find a friend in the lineup.
